Facts of Te Tiriti O Te Waitangi
1. 1250-1300: The first polynesians arrive in Aotearoa.
2. 1769: Captain Cook arrived in aotearoa.
3. 28 october 1825: He Whakaputanga o Te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni/ The declaration of Independence was signed.
4. 6 February 1840: The Treaty of Waitangi is signed.
5.1845: New Zealand wars begin.
6.1865: The native land court is established.
7. 1872: The New Zealand War ends.
8.1906: James Carroll makes is speech in parliament
9.1960: Waitangi day is established as a national day of commemoration. Thirteen years later, it becomes a national holiday.
10.1975: The waitangi Tribunal is set up. In 1985 its powers are extended to investigate historic claims.
